With only a limited number of raffle tickets available, we suggest you buy yours at the CBI office this week between 9 AM and 4 PM to avoid disappointment for this popular fundraiser. Tickets remaining the day of the festival will be available at the main ticket booth.

“The eighth annual Celebration Israel Festival of Food & Culture will take place from 11:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. on Sunday, April 29, at Congregation Beth Israel, 229 Murdock Avenue. Organizers say they plan to transform the shady, creek side property into a bustling Mediterranean market.

Beyond the delicious Israeli food for which the festival is known (think falafel, schwarma and Israeli beer and wine), this year’s line-up features continuous live music, acrobatic performances, local arts & crafts, and surprise appearances by local celebrities and famous figures from Israel’s history.

“Israel stands at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe. Its culture has been enriched by immigrants from Poland to Ethiopia, Siberia to Morocco. How is that for bringing diverse populations to a celebration of Israel?”

The Jewish Community Center sponsors its annual Falafel 5K & Camp Ruach Fun Run the morning of the festival. The 5K begins and ends at the Center, while the fun run takes place at Weaver Park. Participants enjoy a free meal or children’s activities at Celebration Israel at the conclusion of their respective athletic events.

Children will enjoy face painting, bounce houses, and an archaeological dig, plus Mr. Twister-Asheville will perform his wacky magic show and provide balloon art for all ages.

How can you help?

Please come to the CBI office to pick up raffle tickets to sell to friends, relatives, neighbors, and people with whom you come into contact.  Tickets are $5 each, 3 for $10, or 7 for $20. Proceeds support CBI children’s and family programming and the New Israel Fund.

Our first organizational meeting for Congregation Beth Israel’s new community garden is tomorrow, Tuesday March 20th, at the synagogue (229 Murdock Avenue 28804).

In partnership with the Norwood Park and Grove Park/Sunset Mountain Neighborhood Associations and with guidance from members of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church–which started a community garden in the spring of 2010–Beth Israel is installing a modest garden to be tended jointly by synagogue members and CBI’s neighbors. The intention is to donate the majority of the garden’s bounty to those in our community who might not have access to fresh produce (and, of course, gardeners get to pick produce for their families as well).

On Tuesday, March 20th at 6:30 pm, there will be an informational potluck supper during which the CBI community garden plans will be discussed. Please come with your thoughts, questions, and a vegetarian dish to share.

Interested in helping with the garden effort? Volunteer gardeners are needed! No gardening experience required, and the time commitment will not be great, several hours every couple of weeks. If you would like to help the garden but can’t give your time, please consider becoming a garden sponsor. There will be more information on both of these opportunities at the potluck dinner.
